Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society

LMDSS Mission Statement

Members of the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society believe that individuals with Down syndrome are capable of full participation in society and should be given the opportunity to develop their potential.
Therefore, the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society:

  • Provides information, support, and resources to individuals with Down syndrome in B.C. and their families.
  • Provides information about Down syndrome and resources to people and organizations who support individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
  • Advocates that governments and appropriate agencies provide the special resources often needed by individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

The Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society strives to promote opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome.  We do this through supporting families, promoting public awareness, networking with other organizations and individuals and lobbying for appropriate educational, vocational and social opportunities.

The Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society was established in 1989 and members believe that individuals with Down syndrome are capable of full participation in society and should be given the opportunity to develop their potential.  Therefore, the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society provides information, support, and resources to individuals with Down syndrome in B.C. and their families; provides information about Down syndrome and resources to people and organizations who support individuals with Down syndrome and their families; and advocates that governments and appropriate agencies provide the special resources often needed by individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

The society provides:

  • Accurate and current information about Down Syndrome.
  • Meetings with professional guest speakers.
  • Social family events.
  • Quarterly newsletters.
  • "New" parent packages.
  • Resource referrals.
  • Family support through networking needs and concerns.
  • Group advocacy.
  • Information for research projects.
  • Cross-cultural information.
  • Resource information on Down Syndrome i.e.. videos, books.
  • Parent Support Groups.
  • Youth Group.
